Anecdotes from Ethiopia - Home of the Dorze People

The Dorze People live in characteristic houses shaped as heads of elephants.

The old houses are often very small. The new ones bigger. This is caused by natural deterioration caused by for example termites. In fact the houses can be easily moved if termites attack.

In the house an entire family could live. In the center is a fire for warmth and cooking. There is also an area for livestock inside the house.

The small houses might be used for elder people or as so called honeymoon-houses where newlyweds can live for months without leaving the house - getting to know each other.

The architecture of the houses is a tribute to the elephants who left the area many years ago.
